Here’s what happened on The Legend of Korra, Book 4: Balance, Chapter 8, “Remembrances”- After barely escaping Kuvira’s guards, Prince Wu decides that he needs to learn how to defend himself, and Makko agrees to teach him some fighting moves at Asami’s estate. Wu proves to be weaker than Makko thought and after one tap, Wu hits the floor. Wu gathers himself and admits that he’s quite the wimp, saying that he’s nothing like the rough and tough Makko and this prompts Wu to find out more about his guard — including his romantic relationships. When Makko mentions that he used to date Korra, Wu is deeply interested and wants to know all about it.
Makko discusses meeting Korra during their pro-brending days (in Season 1). Makko says he wanted nothing but fame and fortune, but all of that changed when Korra entered the equation. Going down memory lane, Makko talks about Korra proving to be a really great pro-bender and eventually growing a deep connection with her when Amon and the Equalists captured Bolin. Prince Wu interjects to ask if this is when Makko and Korra finally got together, but Makko says no, adding that around the time he began to have feelings for Korra, Asami came into his life after she accidentally knocked him down with her motorbike. Makko recalls having tons of fun with Asami and having to break Korra’s heart when she finally confessed her feelings.

However, when Amon’s brother, Tarrlok captured Korra, Makko realized how much he really felt for her. Asami noticed, and because of this, Makko decided to end things with Asami so he could reveal his own true feelings to Korra. The two happily became a couple, however, being a couple wasn’t doing so well for Makko and Korra and the two fought constantly with Korra constantly accusing him of take everyone else’s side but hers. After realizing that their jobs (Makko being a cop, Korra being the Avatar) was just too much to handle while being in a relationship, Makko recalled breaking up with Korra (in Season 2) and things ending in a heated display. With Korra out of his hair, Makko dove deep into his police work, tracking down the bomber of the supply ships carrying weapons and supplies from Asami’s company. With Asami in tow, Makko went to work on a stake out, but was double-crossed. Narrowly escaping with Asami brought the two closer together and Asami kissed Makko.
